What Happens After Your Portrait Session?

Written by Margaret "Maggie" McCanna | Jun 19, 2026 12:00:00 AM

You've done the hard part. You found a photographer. You said yes to being photographed. You trusted the process, let someone else style your hair and makeup, and stood in front of the camera—even if you started the day convinced you were awkward or unphotogenic.

Then the session ends… and for many women, that's when the next worry begins.

Now what happens? Am I going to have to choose from hundreds of photographs?

What if I love them all? What if I hate them all?

How do I know what to print?

Will someone try to sell me things I don't need?

I've discovered that many clients are more anxious about the ordering appointment than they ever were about the photo session itself.

The good news? Just as I don't expect you to know how to pose, I don't expect you to know what to do with your portraits afterward.

The Portrait Session Isn't the Finish Line

Many people think the photography session is the entire experience. In reality, it's the middle.

The portraits aren't truly complete until they've found a place in your life. A photograph tucked away on a hard drive hasn't quite fulfilled its purpose. The real magic happens when your images become something you can see, hold, and revisit for years to come.

About a week after your portrait session, we meet again for what I call your reveal appointment. It's one of my favorite parts of the entire process.

Your First Look

There's something special about seeing your portraits for the first time.

You've spent years seeing yourself in mirrors, car windows, and phone selfies. You've grown accustomed to quick snapshots and candid moments where someone else happened to press the shutter.

The reveal is different.

It's often the first time you've had the chance to simply sit and see yourself through someone else's eyes.

Not rushed. Not critical. Not comparing yourself to anyone else.

Just seeing.

I've watched women laugh, cry, gasp, and fall completely silent. I've heard:

"I didn't know I looked like that."

"I haven't seen that smile in years."

"My daughter is going to love this."

"I actually look like myself."

Those moments are why I do what I do.

You Don't Have to Choose Alone

Here's one of the biggest misconceptions about luxury portrait photography: people think they'll be handed a gallery of hundreds of images and told to figure it out. That sounds overwhelming because it is overwhelming. There are photographers that do that… but I don’t. Decision fatigue is real. By the time you've looked at dozens of photographs, they all begin to blur together.

So we don't do that.

During your reveal appointment, we look at your portraits together. I'll guide you through the process, helping you narrow down your favorites and identify the images that tell your story best.

Some photographs immediately stand out. Others become favorites because of the expression, the memory they hold, or the way they fit into your family's story.

I help you notice subtle differences between similar images. I help you determine which expressions feel most like you.

There's no pressure to choose quickly. There's no timer counting down. There's no expectation that you'll know exactly what you want the moment you walk in.

We're simply having a conversation about which images speak to you.

The Question That Changes Everything

One of the first questions I'll ask isn't, "Which photograph do you like best?" Instead, I'll ask, "Where do you imagine enjoying these portraits?"

That answer shapes everything that follows, because portraits aren't just images, they're experiences.

Some belong on a living room wall where everyone who enters your home can see them. Some belong in a quiet bedroom where they become part of your daily routine. Some belong in an album that can be pulled off the shelf and shared with grandchildren one day. Some become gifts for family members who will treasure them forever.

Thinking about the destination helps make the choices much easier.

Seeing Your Portraits in Your Home

One of the most helpful parts of the process is our wall art design consultation. It can be difficult to imagine what a portrait will look like hanging above a fireplace or displayed in a hallway. A small print held in your hand doesn't always translate to a large piece of artwork.

That's why I create wall art mockups. Together, we can see how different portraits and arrangements might look in your own space. Should one dramatic image stand alone? Would a collection of portraits tell a richer story? Would black and white complement your decor, or would color bring warmth to the room? Instead of guessing, you can actually see the possibilities.

It's one more way to remove uncertainty from the process.

Albums Tell a Different Story

Sometimes clients ask whether they should choose wall art or an album.

The answer is usually both—but for different reasons.

Wall art is meant to be lived with. It's the portrait that greets you every morning. The one your children grow up seeing. The one visitors notice and comment on. The one that quietly reminds you of a season of life worth remembering.

Albums are more intimate. They're for stories. An album lets you include a wider collection of images and moments from your session. It invites you to sit down, turn pages slowly, and relive the experience. It becomes something you can hand to your children decades from now.

Wall art celebrates a moment. Albums preserve a journey. You don't necessarily have to choose one over the other. You simply decide which parts of your story deserve different places in your life.

Designing Something Beautiful

Creating an album isn't about dragging and dropping images into a template. We design it together. We consider the flow of the story. The opening image. The quiet moments. The joyful expressions. The details. The closing portrait.

Every page should feel intentional. The result is something that feels more like a family heirloom than a photo book… and something you'll want to leave out on a coffee table instead of tucked away in a closet.

You Don't Have to Measure Walls

One of my favorite luxury services is one that surprises people: once you've chosen your wall art, I can help with installation.

That means you don't have to wonder where to hang things. You don't have to search for a level. You don't have to worry about spacing a gallery wall evenly.

You don't have to make another decision.

Your artwork arrives ready to become part of your home. And because installation is included, the process stays as effortless as possible.

It's one more way I can care for the details so you don't have to.

The Goal Isn't to Sell You More

I know there's a fear many people have about ordering appointments.

They imagine a high-pressure sales presentation.

That's not what happens here. My role isn't to convince you to buy something you don't want. My role is to help you create something you'll love for years to come.

I ask questions. I listen. I make suggestions based on your family, your home, and your goals.

I help you avoid common mistakes, like ordering artwork that's too small or overlooking images you'll later wish you'd included.

The process is collaborative, not transactional.

Why Printed Portraits Matter

Digital files are wonderful. They make sharing easy. They let you send photographs across the country in seconds. But they aren't the final destination. Technology changes. Hard drives fail. Phones are replaced. Cloud services evolve.

Printed portraits ask nothing of you. They don't need passwords or updates. They're simply there. On your walls. On your shelves. In your hands. Waiting to be enjoyed.

Long after trends have changed and technology has moved on, they'll still tell your story.

My Favorite Part

People often assume my favorite part of this work is taking the photographs. And yes, I love that part.

But the reveal appointment is different. It's where confidence meets evidence. It's where clients discover they were worried for nothing. It's where daughters see their mothers as beautiful.

It's where women realize they've been far kinder to everyone else than they've ever been to themselves. And it's where portraits stop being photographs and become memories, artwork, and heirlooms.

The Best Part Comes After

If you're considering a portrait session, I hope this offers a little reassurance.

You don't have to know how to pose.

You don't have to know which images to choose.

You don't have to know whether you want wall art or an album.

You don't have to know where to hang it.

You don't even have to know what will look best in your home.

You simply have to show up.

I'll guide you through the rest.

From our first conversation to your portrait reveal, from wall art mockups to album design, from selecting your favorite images to installing artwork in your home, every step is designed to feel thoughtful, personal, and easy.

Because the goal was never just to create beautiful photographs.

It's to help you live with them.

To see them every day.

To pass them on.

And to make sure that long after the camera is put away, your story has a beautiful place to belong.
